A motorist was detected driving at a speed of 186 kilometres per hour in Kilkenny over the bank holiday weekend.

The speeding driver was clocked travelling 86 kilometres over the 100km limit at N24 at Tibberaghny, Piltown on Saturday.

In Kilkenny there were additional checkpoints and a high garda visibility on the roads as a road safety campaign was in place over the bank holiday weekend.

There were 20 mandatory intoxicant checkpoints in place along with 44 other checkpoints. According to local gardaí four vehicles were seized for having no insurance in Kilkenny and there were two people arrested on suspicion of drink driving and a third person arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

Nationally, there were 946 drivers detected speeding over the weekend and 127 people arrested for on suspicion of driving while under the influence.
