Community rally behind young girl who needs regular medical treatment

Family and friends of Kayleigh Woolfield are fundraising for two great causes that have helped them in their journey.

The five year old girl, who lives a short distance from County Kilkenny in neighbouring Tipperary has been diagnosed with CVID which stands for 'Common Variable immunodeficiency' a rare immune system disorder that causes low levels of the proteins in the body that help fight infections.

Medical professionals are unsure if any more health issues or autoimmune disorders will present as a result of the condition and as the name might suggest, it is by no means 'common' as according to the HSE, 1:10000 of population are affected, and only around 60 children in Ireland.

Kayleigh has undergone her first IVIG treatment in Crumlin Children's Hospital and will continue to do so every three weeks for the rest of her life. Approximately half of the infused antibodies Kayleigh will receive through treatment are metabolised over three to four weeks, so repeat doses of IVIG are required at regular intervals. Since IVIG only replaces the missing end product but it doesn't correct Kayleigh’s defect in antibody production.

In order to give something back, family and friends are raising much needed funds for two chosen charities - the Ronald McDonald House, who housed the family for Kayleigh's recent admission to Crumlin Hospital, and Scoil Aonghusa, the special school in Cashel, Co Tipperary Kayleigh will be attending in September.

They have set the challenge of running 120KM from Kayleigh's house all the way to Ronald McDonald House in Crumlin to two very capable young men. Daragh Byrne (26) from Thurles and Luke Beresford (22) also from Thurles.

Both men will run 60km starting on the night of Friday, October 11 and they are expected to arrive around lunch time on Saturday, October 12.

The family are seeking help from the public. Anyone can donate €20 per Km ran or as much as one would like.

They have raised over half their target already and they are blown away by peoples generosity. For anyone who wishes to reach out, donate their time for the day of the race, sponsorship and more please email - Tamsynraven@msn.com
