On August 16, 1844, the first foundation stone of the Church of the Immaculate Conception was put in place by Rev Joseph Butler.
The Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception was completed in 1852 to a design by renowned Irish architect William Deane Butler.

The interior features a vast nave with a giant organ gallery and an ornate plaster ceiling. Both Fr Butler and Fr Aylward looked after the completion of the church until 1854.
