Glengarry Glen Ross - A triumph of local theatre at the Watergate

KATS' production of Glengarry Glen Ross at the Watergate PICTURE: Gary Kavanagh

A packed house gave a standing ovation for an outstanding opening night of Glengarry Glen Ross at the Watergate Theatre last night.

KATS Theatre Group have pulled out all the stops in their latest production and the attention to detail is clearly visible in the performances which are slick and well rehearsed.

David Doyle makes a fine debut performance with KATS as Blake. The Kilkenny-based actor is no stranger to the stage of the Watergate having performed in several productions with Kilkenny Musical Society and in the Watergate Pantomime.

The cast also includes numerous well known local actors including Michael Hayes (Shelley Levene), Fergal Millar (Ricky Roma), Shane O'Keeffe (Dave Moss), Eoghan Fingleton (George Aaronow), Peter Madden (John Williamson), Niall Bambrick (James Lingk) and Niall Morrissey (Detective Baylen) who all deliver impressive performances. The play is directed by Ciarán Dunphy who waited over five years for the amateur rights to appear.

"This play does more than just tell a story; it forces us to confront uncomfortable truths about our values, our motivations, and the systems we participate in. The characters in Glengarry Glen Ross are not just salesmen - they are survivors in a hostile environment, each grappling with their own fears, insecurities, and desires.  Their interactions are a masterclass in manipulation manipulation, power dynamics, and the art of persuasion, making the play both intellectually and emotionally engaging," said the director.

The set is superb and changes seamlessly between scenes, it is designed by John O'Donoghue.

The production team consists of Delia Lowery (producer), Bill Molloy (stage manager), Gerry Taylor (light and sound designer), Anita Cullen (props), Clare Gibbs (costume designer) and Sarah Bergin (PR). Crew members are Bill Molloy (stage manager), Anita Cullen (stage crew), Amy Mullhand (stage crew) and Pam Foran (stage crew).

This modern morality play is written by David Mamet and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1984. The play was adapted into a successful film in 1992 and starred one of the greatest ensemble casts ever including Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon and Alec Baldwin.

Glengarry Glen Ross runs this evening and tomorrow evening at 7.30pm at the Watergate Theatre. To book go to www.watergatetheatre.ie
