Funding boost of €58,000 for sports projects in Kilkenny

Kilkenny TD John Paul Phelan has welcomed the funding

Kilkenny is to receive €58,000 for projects aimed at getting more people active and healthy, Fine Gael TD, John Paul Phelan, has confirmed.

The funding for Kilkenny Sports Partnership projects is part of more than €5m in Dormant Accounts Funding to be awarded to Local Sports Partnerships and Active Disability Ireland in 2024.

“This is welcome funding and will be distributed by our local sports partnership. The funding includes €30,000 for hubs; €14,000 for volunteer supports; €6,000 for equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives and €8,000 for projects that fall under Her Moves.

“In a sports-mad county like Kilkenny where we’re fortunate to have a strong GAA, soccer, rugby, running, walking and other sports tradition, this investment will hopefully entice even more people to get active, participate in clubs and initiatives in their communities," said Deputy Phelan.

Announcing the funding, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin said: “Today's announcement of the Dormant Accounts Fund allocation will support a range of excellent work across the country and is a testament to our commitment to fostering inclusivity and well-being through sports and physical activities.

“This funding will empower innovative projects that support volunteers in disadvantaged areas, promote women's participation in sports, and provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities. By championing a ‘Sport for All’ ethos, we aim to create a healthier and more active Ireland for everyone.”

The Dormant Accounts Funding allows unclaimed funds from accounts in credit institutions in Ireland to be utilised for projects focused on overcoming the barriers and challenges to participation in sport for those who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, or those affected by a disability.
