John Street, Kilkenny
Members of the Kilkenny City Municipal District were presented with an update on preparation of the John’s Quay / John Street urban design strategy.
The aim of the project is to enhance the quality of life in the area by improving public spaces, supporting local businesses and preserving the cultural and historical identity of the community.
So far, a meeting with 19 stakeholders and a public consultation with 18 members of the public have taken place. A survey with approximately 100 responses has also been carried out with its findings expected to be presented in October.
Labour councillor Sean Ó hArgain has welcomed the presentation, but says the issue of parking needs to be rectified in the area, while councillors queried if the Kilkenny County Council campus and the Lacken Walkway respectively could be included in future plans.

The future of John Street and surrounding areas has created both excitement and concern over the past number of months.
As previously reported by the Kilkenny People, the possibility of implementing a looped tourist trail to incorporate John Street in Kilkenny City was touted by Mayor Andrew McGuinness.
The potential trail would be included on all digital and printed assets created by Kilkenny County Council and all tourism and retail bodies, encouraging footfall to the John Street area.
Commencement of the next stage of the process is expected to get under way in December.
