Significant funding announced for six Kilkenny areas

The funding is worth over €14,000

Funding of €14,500 has been allocated to six walking trails in Kilkenny in a major boost for communities across the county.

The announcement was made by Fine Gael’s Minister Heather Humphreys, with an investment of €1 million set to support 517 walking trails around the country.

The local funds will shared between; Gathabawn Rural Development Group, Mountain Grove Residents Association, Thomastown Community Network, Freshford Tidy Towns, Tullahought Community Development and Windgap Community Development.

"Walkways and trails are a blessing for communities in communities across Kilkenny, providing an outlet to get fresh air, exercise, connect with neighbours and friends and boost our mental wellbeing. We all became so familiar with these walking trails during COVID lockdowns, and there is no doubting their valuable contribution to Kilkenny towns and villages," local Fine Gael TD, John Paul Phelan remarked.

"In Kilkenny, we are fortunate to have such committed community organisations, and I am delighted that this funding will support them to maintain and upgrade the walking trails. This will allow for crucial investment to be made in the walking trails, including the purchase of important equipment, or carrying out small scale maintenance works," he added.

"The funding will also support the promotion of the trails as tourist attractions, which will provide a welcome economic boost for the wider communities across Kilkenny. I look forward to walking these trails in the coming weeks and months and seeing their continued success," Deputy Phelan concluded.
