Gardaí in Kilkenny are warning people not to share intimate images online after a number of complaints of blackmail were made in recent weeks.
A garda spokesperson said that a number of complaints had been received in relation to young people who were duped into sharing intimate images online.
"They posted the pictures to someone who was posing as 'a friend', but who was a stranger.
"After the intimates images were sent the person was blackmailed and threatened that if they did not pay over cash the pictures would be posted online.
"Gardaí are investigating these matters," said the spokesperson.
"Blackmail and extortion are criminal offences and it is also an offence to distribute or publish intimate images of a person, without consent and with intent to cause harm under Coco's Law.
"We would advise people not to share intimate images or personal information online and to only befriend online contacts after you have established their bona fides," added the spokesperson.
