‘Grave concerns’ over speed and space at Kilkenny cemetery

Foulkstown Cemetery in Kilkenny

Concerns have been raised over the volume and speed of traffic in the region of Foulkstown Cemetery by local Labour Party councillor Sean Ó hArgain.

Mr Ó hArgain’s concerns follow a number of local people’s disquiet over the traffic situation in the area, with calls for traffic management and/or a land solution in order to cater for the growing demand of families who wish to lay their loved ones to rest in the cemetery and to allow them visit deceased family safely.

“Once people get past the roundabout on that road (Waterford Road) they do start speeding,” Cllr Ó hArgain commented.

“There have been accidents close to the grounds and up the road as well,” he said, adding, a traffic cam may be needed to address this ‘major concern’.

The location received national headlines in September when a young man lost his life in a one car collision directly across from the cemetery.

The burial ground is the second largest in the city and environs and is adjacent to Kilkenny Rugby Club, which is a hive of activity for underage and adult rugby at weekends. According to one regular driver in the area, this adds to safety concerns, with users of both facilities often parking on the road-side with space at a premium for high profile parish events such as cemetery masses.

However, Kilkenny County Council are unaware of any requests for additional land for burial or parking facilities. Mr Ó hArgain acknowledged this may become an issue in the future but praised the ongoing co-operation between the rugby club and Foulkstown cemetery for parking.
