Kilkenny man begins the challenge of a lifetime in late father's memory

Best wishes to Gowran's David Carter

Kilkenny man begins the challenge of a lifetime in late father's memory

Gowran man, David Carter began his 'Ultra 300 Challenge' on Monday as he attempts to run 50km every day with a total of 300km to cover across routes locally as well as in counties; Carlow, Kildare, Wexford, Waterford and Tipperary.

David is undertaking this challenge until Saturday in memory of his late father, Charlie Carter, who passed away in 2010 aged just 60.

Fittingly, the final day of his run takes place on the date his late father would have celebrated his 75th birthday, concluding at the Young Irelands GAA & Camogie Club, a location the pair shared many cherished memories together.

David is aiming to raise vital funds for three organisations, the Dillon Quirke Foundation, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and Young Irelands GAA & Camogie Club in Kilkenny.

"These causes are all close to my heart for different reasons and I wanted to do something in dad’s memory," he told Kilkenny Live in October.

"The Ultra 300 Challenge will contribute towards continuing their significant community impact," the runner added.

The local man’s love affair with both hurling and running dates back many years. Like many of us, these past times bring us great sporting pleasure, but for David it’s more than that. From playing junior hurling with his dad aged 47 in 1997, to recalling many happy days spent together when running the highways and byways of County Kilkenny. Charlie’s memory lives on.

Almost 15 years on from his passing, it’s 'go big or go home' according to David who is keen to go the extra yard for the man he 'idolised' so much and in the process, support worthy causes in Gowran and beyond.

"I’ve travelled the world but the link to home has always been there," he claimed, adding, 'the spirit of friendship and the community' have been a great support in his endeavours so far.

In preparation, David hopes he can remain 'injury free' claiming it may be a case of 'mind over body' to pass this ultimate test.

David will document his entire fundraising journey via social media (@ultra300challenge).
