Former Kilkenny hurler, Walter Walsh
Four-time All-Ireland winner with Kilkenny, Walter Walsh has told the Kilkenny People Sport Podcast the time was right to call time on his decorated inter-county career.
Over a glittering career in the black and amber, the forward won eight Leinster titles, four National League titles and three All-Ireland titles as well as an All-Star in 2016.
However, speaking at the launch of the GOAL Mile, sponsored by AIB, the Tullogher Rosbercon clubman said he felt now was the right time to hang up his Kilkenny boots.
"I just think the time is right," he commented, adding, "there's not many lads playing inter-county at 33 years of age."
"If I could just drift away into the wilderness and say nothing (about retiring) I probably would have. I didn't want much fuss," Walsh continued.
The former All-Star joined the Kilkenny senior panel in 2012 at 21 years of age, making a man of the match debut in the All-Ireland final replay win against Galway, the first hurling final to be forced to a replay since 1959.
"I've been humbled by the amount of messages and well wishes I've got, I couldn't have imagined the impact I've had on people over my career with Kilkenny.
"I was humbled and I suppose a bit shocked by the messages and I still have to get back to a lot of people and I want to give that a good bit of time and get back to people who've taken time out of their busy days to send me a message," he remarked.

Walsh is supporting AIB's GOAL Mile campaign. For over 40 years, the GOAL Mile has seen tens of thousands of people run or walk a mile (just 2,000 steps) to raise funds for GOAL at Christmas, bringing people together in their communities to support GOAL’s humanitarian work in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. These funds support the charity’s work with vulnerable communities in 15 countries across Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe, delivering a wide range of humanitarian and development programmes.
The Kilkenny star is encouraging communities across County Kilkenny and the country to ‘Step Up Together’ and take part in the campaign.
Members of the public who register for the GOAL Mile will once again have the chance to win one of the ten €1,000 prizes for their GAA, Camogie, or LGFA club.
