James Stephens were crowned JJ Kavanagh & Sons Junior Section B champions on Saturday evening, beating O'Loughlin Gaels in a thrilling game (1-17 to 2-13) in Danesfort.

Among the Village starters was Jamie O'Keeffe at wing-forward who played an important role on the night and throughout the season so far.

O'Loughlin Gaels made a bright start leading 2-2 to 0-5 after 15 minutes, with Kevin Murphy and Sammy Johnson netting for the city team. But James Stephens stayed in touch and a forward line which included; David Walton, Mikey Drennan and Daniel Ring kept the scoreboard ticking throughout.

Walton hit back with a Village goal before the break leaving the scoreline at 1-10 to 2-6 in favour of James Stephens at half-time.

The second half did little to seperate the teams in a near replica of the league final of a few weeks earlier. And like the league decider, a game of fine margins saw the Village hold out to win by the smallest of margins.

A win for the city club over their near rivals is always sweet but for O'Keeffe the night was particularly special.

In 2023, the local hurler and Castlewarren Celtic soccer player's future looked bleak after he picked up what appeared to be a life changing neck injury during a training game on the Larchfield pitch.

Jamie, his family and friends were unsure if we would ever play sport or even walk again.

Fast-forward 12 months and after much physio and personal determination, O'Keeffe returned for the 2024 season as fit as ever, keen to win silverware with his beloved club.

He achieved that shining ambition under the Danesfort lights on Saturday night.

James Stephens now advance to JJ Kavanagh & Sons JHC Semi-Finals and will discover their opponents next weekend following the completion of the re-arranged Section A Quarter-Finals.
