Tributes were paid and fond memories shared as Kilkenny came together recently and paid its respects to photographer Michael Brophy.
Mick, as he was fondly known, passed away on December 28. A freelance photographer, Mick’s work was often seen across the pages of the Kilkenny People, but it was through his time working at soccer matches across the county that I got to know him.
A man with a wonderful eye for a picture he would arrive at games, pick a spot in a corner where the action was flowing, then snap away.

A quick chat for the teamsheet and then he would be gone - but you knew some great images were coming your way.
Soccer and rugby provided the bulk of his jobs for years, but Mick could turn his hand to any occasion.
A sociable character - no doubt helped by his years with the famed McVities Society in the old Caislean pub - he could make people feel at ease as he went about his work with efficiency.
An entertaining man with a sharp sense of humour, Mick was one of a kind. He will be missed.
Predeceased by his parents Michael and Annie, Mick Brophy is survived by his sister Pam, brothers Noel and Gerry, sisters-in-law, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends.
Rest In Peace
