The Cats faced near-rivals Tipperary in the decider, with the final forced to a replay after a spine-tingling draw (Kilkenny 3-22 Tipperary 1-28). A late John O'Dwyer free look set to secure the Premier County's first Liam MacCarthy title since 2010, but in the nail biting dying minutes, the free was signalled wide by Hawk Eye sending the match to a replay.

In the subsequent replay, the Noresiders turned on the style to prevail on a scoreline of 2-17 to 2-14 in what was Brian Cody's tenth All-Ireland winning season as manager.
