Creative students from St Patrick’s School on the Kells Road in Kilkenny were recently announced as winners at this year’s FÍS Film Awards.

The students (Mikie, Luke, Michael, David, Zac, Nathan and Fionn) won in the ‘Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking - Originality’ category for their short film, Closing Date.

The students were guided by teacher John Prendergast and supported by the wonderful team of teachers and SNAs at the school.

School Principal, Jane Dowling, stated that the school was ‘incredibly proud’ of the students and their achievement.

“It has helped put our school on the map and we are thrilled to see the film being celebrated on the national stage,” she said.

The FÍS Film Awards are presented to young students for their achievements in directing, acting, design, and music, across multiple film genres, such as comedy, drama, horror, science fiction, and films as Gaeilge.

It empowers students to put their creative skills to the test, whilst enhancing their collaboration skills, with access to filmmaking tools and equipment, in the supportive setting of their school.

By creating their own stories, characters, and visual effects, students foster creative expression, lateral thinking, and personal growth beyond the standard classroom setting.

The initiative also helps teachers enhance their students’ digital literacy and communication skills while providing hands-on experience with filmmaking tools to build confidence with new technologies.
