The Waterford Road in Kilkenny
Over €1 million has been made available for significant upgrade works to the Waterford Road in Kilkenny City.
The local allocation was given the full backing of councillors at March’s sitting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District.
The funding, which equates to €1.4 million in total, will be put towards reinforcing the existing cycle lane on the road.
A non-statutory public consultation was held on the Radial Routes within the city (Waterford Road included) to seek feedback and input on how these routes can be best designed to meet the community’s needs.

The feedback has subsequently been used to guide the ongoing design process.
As a result, works will involve the removal of bollards along the road from the Ring Road to its junction with the Nuncio Road, replacing them with a kerb. A decision welcomed by Fine Gael councillor, David FitzGerald, who commented there would be a 'resistance' to any more bollards.
Furthermore, the island in the middle of the road will also be removed, to accommodate for the enhanced cycle lane on the road and a bus stop (as opposed to) a bus shelter, will also be installed, a point queried by both Cllr John Coonan (Fianna Fáil) and Cllr Sean Ó hArgain (Labour).
The latest development is part of a wider development plan in the area but works are subject to further funding being secured.
Works are expected to begin in June or July of this year and will be ongoing for the remainder of 2025 and 2026.
A public consultation process will be in operation until Monday, April 14, when it is then expected that the relevant documents will go to tender.
