A leading figure in Kilkenny politics was met with warm applause upon her return to the Kilkenny County Council chambers last week, where she provided an update on her work in Brussels and reflected on her political journey.

As MEP Kathleen Funchion addressed her former colleagues, one question in particular sparked intrigue - would she consider a run for the Irish presidency? With a wry smile, Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick put the question to her.

“That I can deny with 100% certainty,” MEP Funchion replied, putting any speculation to rest.

The Kilkenny MEP also spoke about her role in the European Parliament, where she serves on three key committees: the Committee on Regional Development (REGI), the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL), and the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM).

She highlighted the need to simplify elements of EU Parliament procedure and cut through bureaucracy for more effective governance.

Cllr Mary Hilda Cavanagh welcomed MEP Funchion back, praising her work and noting the historic nature of her election.

“You have written yourself into the history books,” she remarked.

As she looks ahead to the next four years in Brussels, MEP Funchion’s focus appears to remain firmly on her parliamentary work - rather than any bid for Áras an Uachtaráin.
