Kilkenny gardaí made a shocking discovery on the outskirts of the city last Wednesday, as a local driver was charged with a number of offences.
A Passat vehicle caught the attention of the gardaí's Roads Policing Unit due to smoke being released from the vehicle.
"The smoking vehicle pinged a 'No Insurance' alert but was also found to have an NCT expired two years. A further inspection discovered a dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree, DPF cut out with soot everywhere," a garda spokesperson said.
"A road test under Section 20 RTA revealed that the car's acceleration was at odds with its 1.6 litres and we suspect a serious remap.

"If the driver wasn't already uninsured, a chat with his company would likely have the modifications affect cover," they added.
"This whole 'driving thing' isn't a game, we are attending horrific collisions with untold pain.
"It was remarked by a passing pedestrian that the vehicle from behind looks like a wheelbarrow. We can't possibly comment," they concluded.
