Public lighting costs were €560,000 higher than budget in 2024, according to Kilkenny County Council’s latest unaudited Annual Financial Statement.

The financial statement contends that this 'was mainly due to increased energy costs'.

The net operating cost of the fire service also came in at €1m higher than budget 'due to increases in payroll and training costs'.

Additional expenditure was also incurred in tourism, festivals, library operations, maintenance of parks and open spaces and in the provision of additional match funding for the various grant schemes.

A reduction in rates strike offs and additional rates income helped to fund these overspends.

The total expenditure incurred on the provision of services by the Council in 2024 was €125.8 million.
