Parents of the 285 pupils became worried when they saw cracks in the ceiling and they heard stories of the high alumina cement which was used in the building.

According to a Kilkenny City engineer this cement ‘could be suspect’. However, he added that some buildings with this cement had proved alright while others had not been so good.

On advice, school manager Very Rev Patrick Ryan, Adm St Patrick’s closed the school for a week for inspection.

On Tuesday of this week it was examined by the Institute of Industrial Research and Standards and the school was given the all-clear. The school will now reopen on Monday.

“Everyone’s mind is at ease now,” said Fr Ryan. “The parents, teachers and all will be happier now that the test has been carried out.”
