New data names Kilkenny as one of Ireland’s most artistic cities

A new index reveals that smaller regional cities are outperforming traditional metros when adjusted for population.

New data names Kilkenny as one of Ireland’s most artistic cities

New data published by Aura Print ranked Kilkenny as the fourth most visually creative city in Ireland per capita based on an index analysing Eventbrite listings, accredited arts degrees and gallery data.

Galway was ranked first on the list while Limerick and Cork came in second and third place respectively.

Kilkenny was the highest ranked city without a dedicated art school with the report saying that despite its smaller size, it maintains a high per capita rate of art events, reflecting its dynamic and creative community.

The index highlighted a shift towards decentralisation of creativity from Dublin to smaller cities with factors like the rising cost of living and the prominence of online platforms leading to artists moving away from larger urban centres.

Speaking on the findings of the data, Aura Print branding expert Liam Smith said: “In today’s digital-first world, the notion that only Dublin or Cork can foster creativity is outdated. Regional cities are carving out their own visual identities.”

“From a branding perspective, this makes cities like Limerick or Kilkenny immensely valuable. They’re more than tourist spots, these cities are also living, breathing ecosystems.”
