Over 13 kilometres of roads have been improved in the Castlecomer Municipal District so far in 2025 with roughly the same amount to be completed before the end of the year.
Almost €1.7m was allocated to the roads worked on, the longest stretch of which was a 2.2km improvement of Protestant Road, Coolcullen, completed at a cost of €282,880. The issue was discussed at Monday's meeting of Castlecomer MD.
Councillor Mary Hilda Cavanagh was full of praise for the update given by area engineer Paraic Butler, but highlighted the need for more funds to be made available for the works.
“We must give serious praise for the work in our area, but we could do with at least four times what we’re getting,” she said.
Councillor Cavanagh gave notice of a motion calling for ramps to be installed in Togher Crescent, Urlingford which was acquired by the council some years ago as residents have pointed out a safety risk to children.
Butler replied that his office has already been looking into making the upgrade through the Community Improvement Scheme.
