Kilkenny County Council advancing plans for new community park

The Clover Field Site in Ferrybank

Kilkenny County Council has engaged the services of a multidisciplinary landscape and engineering led design team to prepare a masterplan for the future development of a high-quality, community centred and multifunctional local park on a greenfield site in Christendom, Ferrybank.

The County Council took possession of around 9.5 acres of land in late 2023, including sports pitches and a clubhouse from the trustees of Clover Meats with a condition that the lands could only be used for community recreational use attached to the transfer by the trustees.

The first steps in the development of the masterplan commenced with a public consultation which took place on Thursday, May 1 at the primary care centre in Ferrybank drawing a strong attendance of around 60 people.

Following the consultation, the design team met with the County Council in late May to review the public submissions and decide how to proceed with regard to the points raised.

The Clover Centre site has been zoned as a green space and is situated at the periphery of Ferrybank.

Additional meetings have also been held in May and June with local stakeholders to discuss the demand for a playing pitch the needs of the men’s shed and potential of sharing the facilities with the local women’s shed.

An asbestos survey has also been completed on the derelict community building.

The design team in partnership with the County Council are currently reviewing constraints and opportunities based on consultations held so far with another of these meetings to take place towards the end of July.

After this it is hoped that the first conceptual proposal will be presented to the Piltown Municipal District members for further consideration in Q4 of this year.
