Silver celebrations in Kilkenny as Floodlit Football League turns 25

Celebrating the launch of the 25th season of the Floodlit League were Eamon Cleere and Gerry O’Keeffe (league co-ordinators) and John Dalton (Chancellors Mills, sponsor)

Twenty-five years and going strong! The Kilkenny Floodlit soccer league will mark a quarter of a century of action when the new season kicks off shortly.

The league began in 2001 when Eamon Cleere and Gerry O’Keeffe, who both had been involved in the Nightowls League - Eamon as a team manager and Gerry as a player - felt that the time was right to form a Kilkenny league similar to the Nightowls.

The Nightowls league had been run as a commercial venture by a Cork-based company with leagues being held all over Ireland and parts of UK. Locally, the ambition was to form a league that would be in Kilkenny, by Kilkenny and for Kilkenny - all games would be played in the county and would be organised locally.

It was also decided that the league would be non-profit, with proceeds donated to a good cause locally. The charity chosen to benefit from the new Soccer League was The O’Neill Centre. To date over €300,000 has raised.

For the first four seasons of the league games were played in Kilkenny College thanks to College Administrator Peter Dukelow.

The league then moved to Scanlon Park and Loreto where games were played on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights from September to May.

Over the years teams have come from all corners of Kilkenny City and county, while sides from Carlow and Tipperary have also travelled to play floodlit winter soccer.

The league is thankful for the great sponsorship over the years. First sponsorship came from John Downey’s JD Computers firm, followed by C&C Security. Morrissey Motors were the next sponsors and had a team in the league for many seasons with Kevin Morrissey, a great supporter of the league, at the helm.

Current sponsors Daltons Chancellors Mills have been sponsoring the league since 2018. John Dalton previously played in the league for many seasons with Threecastles side Rock Utd.

Preparations are underway for the new season which will start in early October. Games will be played on Monday and Wednesday evenings from then until April.

The Floodlit League primarily caters for players who do not play junior league soccer. A transfer system for players who want to move from one league to the other is in operation.

Details for new teams wishing to enter this season are on the league website. Players looking to join a team can get contact details there also. Further info is available from www.kffl.ie.
