New Kilkenny project 'a step forward' as plans are put in place for city works

The Waterford Road in Kilkenny

New development plans for Kilkenny City have been described as 'a step forward' with a busy stretch of road set for a makeover.

The local authority has announced that the Waterford Road Pedestrian and Cyclist Improvement Scheme is now progressing to construction stage, following the completion of the detailed design and planning process.

The project forms part of the wider Active Travel Programme for Kilkenny City and is one of the key radial routes into the city centre.

It's hoped the scheme will deliver significant community benefits, including; improved connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, calmer traffic environments in neighbourhoods and enhanced road safety for all road users; pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and public transport passengers.

Feedback from public consultations has guided the design process and informed the programme of delivery. The Freshford Road and Granges Road corridor, prioritised as a key school route, was completed last year and attention now turns to the Waterford Road scheme. - FULL DETAILS HERE

"This is a hugely important investment for the local residents and schools along the Waterford Road," Mayor, Cllr John Coonan said.

"By creating safer crossings, dedicated cycle lanes, and school bus bays, we are making it easier and safer for children to walk, cycle, or take the bus to school. These improvements will give parents peace of mind, reduce congestion at school gates, and encourage healthier, more sustainable ways of travelling," Cllr Coonan added.

Kevin Pettit, Project Manager from the Active Travel team, Kilkenny County Council, commented: "The Waterford Road scheme has been carefully designed to respond to community feedback and best practice in road safety.

"The phased works will significantly improve walking and cycling infrastructure while integrating safe crossings and school transport facilities. This project represents a step forward in delivering a connected network of safe, sustainable travel routes across Kilkenny City," he concluded.
