A look back at last weekend's premier division action

Kilkenny Soccer- Evergreen still remain top as Thomastown snatch late win

Action from Evergreen’s away win against Callan that maintained their position at the top of the table in the St Canice’s Credit Union Premier Division last Sunday morning.

There was a full book of fixtures in the local Kilkenny football league last weekend as the Marble City escaped the worst of Storm Amy.

Action in the Junior St Canice's Credit Union Premier Division began on Friday evening with Freebooters entertaining Evergreen B on the Fairgreen where goals were aplenty.

Joseph Banville proved to be the star of the show for Booters as he netted a hat-trick in a 7-2 success with Cian Franey, Afeez Ramoni, Hamzi Harrak and Sam Ayewole also on target as they maintained their place in third place in the table.

The Evergreen B goals came courtesy of Harry Cummins and Ben Kinsella and while they were well beaten on the night, they will still be relatively pleased with a decent start to the league campaign.

Moving on to Sunday, there was three more games in the top tier with leaders Evergreen travelling away to Callan United.

The defending league winners made it a five from five 100% record with a 4-0 win as they notched two goals in each half.

David Grincell opened the scoring in the 20th minute via a Mikey Drennan assist and just four minutes later, 29 year-old Dean Cornally doubled the tally.

Ethan Phelan added on two more second half goals and even at this relatively early stage, the signs look ominous for Evergreen’s challengers.

Elsewhere Newpark travelled to the prince Grounds in Castlecomer and came away with a hugely impressive 4-1 win at the expense of Deen Celtic. The home team had opened the scoring through a Kealan Ring effort in the 9th minute but from there it was all Newpark with Anthony Delaney x2, Tony Marques and Clayton Barry all scoring before the half-time break.

It maintains the winners up and down start to the league season with three wins and three losses thus far.

The final premier division clash of the weekend was the tightest of the lot as Thomastown United made home comforts count in a 2-1 success over Bridge United.

A tight opening half was highlighted by a goal from Jimmy Maher for Thomastown but all the drama arrived in the second half with Llanos Lohinski firstly equalising in the 53rd minute for Bridge before Thomastown stopper Nathan Sheery was sent off.

The home side still found a way to win though with Darragh Dack grabbing a stoppage time winner for Thomastown.
