‘Blind eye being turned’: Calls for action over illegal matchday parking

Matchday parking has been a persistent problem around Nowlan Park

Kilkenny City Municipal District councillors spoke out against illegal parking on green areas and double-yellow lines around Nowlan Park on matchdays at their monthly meeting on Friday.

As the county championship reaches its climax, residents have expressed their anger over lack of enforcement on parking laws with cars regularly obstructing footpaths and infrastructure, especially causing difficulty for those with disabilities.

Cllr Andrew McGuinness (FF) has been outspoken about the issue in the past asserting there was a “blind eye being turned” and again called for action saying “we’ve been begging for it here for God knows how long” while mentioning that McDonagh Junction had 1,000 spaces available.

Some examples of successful parking systems at other large stadiums were highlighted such as Semple Stadium in Thurles and O’Moore Park in Portlaoise with Cllr Joe Malone (FF) saying “Thurles sorted it out 20 years ago” and raised potential dangers: “You couldn’t get an emergency vehicle in there”.

The fact that the issue has come up time and again was a source of frustration for councillors as Mayor John Coonan (FF) pointed out that “we should be harder on people when provisions are made”.

Senior Engineer Stan Cullen responded that parking barriers were being looked into as a potential measure to curb errant parking, but it was unclear as to whether this would be done in time for the upcoming county finals.
