Cast and crew members at the launch

A young Kilkenny film maker has received a hugely positive response to her debut film, Lyra.

Billy Byrne’s on John Street hosted a launch for the film premiere and the cast and crew and their friends and family enjoyed a special screening of the 25-minute film which was shot in Kilkenny.

The coming of age film, which is shot at various locations tells the story of a group of teenagers and the universal challenges and struggles that they encounter. The film boasts an impressive soundtrack from up and coming, young Irish bands.

Lorna West who wrote, produced and edited the film was involved in Young Irish FilmMakers and is in fifth year at Kilkenny College explained that she enjoys the creative process.

“I came up with the idea and posted in on Tik Tok and we got a huge response with over 100 people wanting to audition to be involved in the cast and crew,” she said.

The production of the film is impressive, especially considering it was all done on a voluntary basis with no budget.

It was shot in Kilkenny, in well known locations like RollerCoaster Records, the Peace Park and Kilkenny Castle, in August this year.

The soundtrack for the film was made by young Irish bands who have written and produced their own music.

“We are really grateful to the businesses and venues that hosted us,” said Lorna.

At the film’s premiere there was music by the bands who created the soundtrack and the cast and crew and their families and friends celebrated this great achievement of emerging, young talent.
“We have had a very positive reaction. I was so nervous before the launch but I was blown after by the reaction of the audience to Lyric. Hopefully this is the beginning of something. I love storytelling and it was amazing to be able to adapt this from an idea into a production,” added Lorna.
