Gardaí take decisive action at controversial stretch of Kilkenny road

Driver impatience at Bennettsbridge Road leads to intervention by Kilkenny gardaí

The Kilkenny Roads Policing Unit of An Garda Síochana issued eight Fixed Charged Notices to motorists using the Hatch Markings on approach to the Bennettsbridge Roundabout as an overtaking lane. 

Local gardaí were on patrol last Wednesday evening and gave drivers guilty of the offence an €80 fine and one Penalty Point.

Previously, independent, Cllr Eugene McGuinness voiced his frustration at the traffic situation at the Bennettsbridge Road Roundabout, bemoaning the decision to reduce the stretch of road from two lanes to one lane in the Black Quarry area of the city.

Cllr McGuinness has been a vocal critic of the project since it was completed over 12 months ago. 

In putting the question to Mr Cullen at a sitting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District earlier this year, Cllr McGuinness described the current traffic situation in the area as a 'disaster'. - READ MORE HERE

"At this location, motorists who are obeying the rules of the road are endangered by people using this area as an overtake and indeed a lane," a garda statement read.

"Whether we like or don't like a road layout, regulations need to be followed so other road users are not endangered.

"We did not use an unmarked vehicle for this and many drivers actually overtook the patrol car illegally to complete their manoeuvre. Pictured is one of the many vehicles pulling away subsequent to receiving a notice," they concluded.
