The Winter Solstice celebration will be held at Knockroe Passage Tomb this Sunday
A look at old years and new beginnings will descend on Kilkenny with the Winter Solstice celebration at the Coshel in Knockroe this Sunday.
Visitors can experience the dawn alignment at the Knockroe Passage Tomb at 8.40am and the sunset alignment at 3.40pm, weather permitting. Stewarded parking will be available nearby, with attendees encouraged to allow an additional 20 minutes for arrival. The event will be attended by Dr Muiris O’Sullivan who excavated the site.
Guided tours highlighting the rich history and heritage of the Lingaun Valley will also be offered. These will include a trip along the Windgap Village Loop, departing from the Community Centre in Windgap at 11am and a tour of the Slatequarries from the Ormond Quarry at 1.45pm.

As the Solstice falls on a Sunday this year, the usual refreshment stops, including the Lakeside Tea Rooms in Windgap, the Auld Mill Bakery in Grangemockler, and Owning House, will not be open.
Hot takeaway beverages will be available from Walsh’s Shop in Windgap, Pete’s Shop in Kilmoganny until 1pm and outlets in Carrick-on-Suir, Callan and Piltown. Evening meals may be booked in advance at the Dizzy Goat Restaurant in Kilkieran.
The Solstice alignments at Knockroe can also be viewed on the days immediately before and after December 21.
