January: New year big freeze brings heavy snow and strong winds

Review of the Year 2025

The new year began as a winter wonderland, in Kilkenny in 2025, when heavy snow brought the county to a standstill.
The big freeze forced businesses and schools to close, with many people unable to commute to work.


It was great fun for the young (and not so young!) but the serious side saw thousands of customers without electricity and icy conditions causing hazardous conditions on ungritted paths and roads.


Plans for future tourism attractions in the city began to take shape, with the signing of contracts for a new ‘Museum of Medieval Kilkenny.’ A total investment of €8 million provides for the unification of The Tholsel and the Medieval Mile Museum.


A north Kilkenny business was named ‘one to watch’, at a prestigious business program for young companies. Autocoupler, based in Lisdowney, won the 2025 AgTechUCD One to Watch Award at the completion of University College Dublin’s (UCD) fourth AgTechUCD Agccelerator Programme at UCD Lyons Farm (Pictured below).
