January: New year big freeze brings heavy snow and strong winds

Hopes were high for progress on the long-awaited city ringroad, when local TD Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere received confirmation from Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien that the necessary funding will be made available to enable the scheme move to options stage as soon as possible.


Plans were also unveiled, this month, for the first Guaranteed Irish Forest, a 12-hectare haven of native Irish trees located near the scenic village of Inistioge.


Storm Éowyn
It was the weather dominating headlines again as January came to an end, when the country was battered by Storm Éowyn.
A red warning issued by Met Éireann was certainly warranted for Kilkenny, even though the county managed to escape the worst of the storm’s impact from a national perspective.
The winds caused widespread structural damage and left thousands in the county without power, for the second time this year, with gusts of up to 94 km/hr recorded.
