Kilkenny hurling supporters will have to wait an extra week to see the county senior hurlers in action in 2026 after the game with Westmeath was postponed earlier this afternoon.
The Round 1 Walsh Cup encounter was initially stated to take place in the Downs but due to an unplayable pitch amidst the freezing cold conditions, the game was switched to Lakepoint Park in nearby St Loman's for a 2.30pm start.
As a result of the earlier switch, the all-leinster affair was set to take place on a 3G surface in Mullingar but upon inspection that was quickly ruled out by the Kilkenny contingent after consulting with their medical team.
Kilkenny manager Derek Lyng indicated afterwards that his team were willing to play on the grass pitch in St Loman's but after closer inspection that was also deemed unplayable.
It was a very unfortunate turn of events with the game called off only minutes before throw-in and most of the spectaors also through the gate but with only three weeks to Kilkenny's league opener with Offaly, there was no chances being taken.
