A proposal for a five unit age friendly and disability housing development in Loughboy is progressing to the statutory consultation phase this week.

The plans include three two-bed age friendly units and two three-bed wheelchair accessible family homes with all houses being single storey.

A consultation with an ecologist has also been commissioned to assess the environmental impact of the construction and initiatives like hedgehog and bird boxes are being explored to minimise the effect on local wildlife.

Kilkenny City Municipal District members were updated on the plans at their monthly meeting this week and welcomed the potential for new specialised housing stock for those who require it.

Cllr Maria Dollard praised the development of homes “for local people that need an alternative form of housing that they might not have needed 10 years ago,”while Cllr Eugene McGuinness noted that “compared to any other county, we’ve done very well”.

Cllr Joe Malone also expressed satisfaction with the work that Kilkenny County Council has done in relation to housing, saying that “I think there’s light at the end of the tunnel in Kilkenny” and “it gives me great satisfaction to have a small part in someone getting a house”.
