Leas Ceann Comhairle and Fianna Fáil TD for Kilkenny, John McGuinness, has welcomed today’s announcement of funding of €253,062 to support a wide range of projects including churches, homes, streetscapes and landmark heritage buildings across both counties.

The announcement by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, and the Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, confirming funding under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme.

Speaking following the announcement, Deputy McGuinness said:

“I welcome this very significant investment in our built heritage under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2026. This funding recognises the importance of protecting and enhancing historic buildings that are at the heart of our towns, villages and countryside in Carlow and Kilkenny.

"These buildings are not just bricks and mortar – they are part of our shared identity, our local history and our community life. This scheme ensures that they are properly maintained, sensitively restored and protected for future generations, while also supporting skilled local craftspeople and sustaining employment.”

Deputy McGuinness also highlighted the broader impact of the scheme:

“The Built Heritage Investment Scheme represents an excellent partnership between the State, local authorities, communities and private owners. In addition to the public funding announced today, substantial private investment will also be leveraged, ensuring real and lasting benefits on the ground.

"I commend Ministers Browne and O’Sullivan for their continued commitment to heritage protection and for recognising the value of investing in existing building stock to prevent dereliction, vacancy and decay.”

Deputy Peter Chap Cleere also welcomed the funding.

“This funding is about far more than bricks and mortar. It represents an investment in our local history and in the culture and character of our communities. These historic buildings tell the story of our area, and this support will ensure that story is preserved for future generations.”
