The number of gardaí stationed in County Kilkenny reached a record high in 2025, new figures have revealed.
The latest statistics show that there are 226 gardaí operating in the county, as of December 2025.
This is the highest such figure since there were 221 on duty in 2020 and 2021, at a time when garda numbers peaked nationwide.
The number of gardaí in County Kilkenny has fluctuated around the 200 mark over the past 15 years.
The lowest total during that period was the 176 stationed in the county in 2014.

Of the 226 gardaí currently operating in the county, 176 are on general duty and 33 are sergeants. There is also one inspector and one superintendent.
The majority of these are stationed in Kilkenny city, with 142 operating in the Marble City.
Thomastown is comfortably in second place in the county, with a total of 47 gardaí on duty there.
Meanwhile, there are nine in Castlecomer and Mooncoin, five in Callan and four in Urlingford and Graiguenamanagh respectively.
Elsewhere, the following villages boast just the singular garda: Freshford, Ballyhale, Glenmore, Kilmoganny, Piltown and Stonyford.
The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána under Section 33 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024.
