CK United picked up a historic first-ever win at senior level in their Women’s Development League matchup with a hard fought 1-0 win against Wexford FC U23s at Wexford CBS on Sunday afternoon.

An early freekick from captain Fia Murphy was enough to secure all three points for United despite going down to 10 players for most of the contest.

The Carlow-Kilkenny based side were looking to bounce back from an opening day defeat against Waterford FC U23s with Wexford coming off a draw against Bray Wanderers.

The visitors got off to the perfect start after just five minutes as Fia Murphy struck home a freekick from at least 35 years out.

The United captain hit a low shot from distance which bounced just in front of the Wexford keeper who spilled the ball into her own net in what was an unfortunate howler between the sticks.

Midway through the first half it looked like it might be a long day for United as goalkeeper Toyah Hennessey was shown a straight red card for taking down a Wexford attacker outside the penalty area.

However, the away side showed great determination and concentration to see out the win despite playing the vast majority of the game a player down.

CK United move up to fifth place in Group B of the WDL and will try to keep up momentum with a first ever home win as they face Treaty United U23s on Sunday while Wexford FC U23s drop to tenth and will travel to Cobh Ramblers for their next fixture.
