RIP - 'Well-known' Kilkenny postman and former hurler was 'loved by everyone'

Tributes have been flowing in over recent days following the passing of Marty Butler, Moate Road, Ballyragget, County Kilkenny.

Marty was described as being very proud of his age, as he was in his 93rd year at his time of passing.

He spent 45 years working with An Post as a postman, travelling many a mile on his bicycle.

One of the many people who knew Marty described him as 'a great man to talk about the past and had a lovely way of telling it'.

"He lived his life to the full and to a great age," they said. "I remember him hurling for Ballyragget many years ago. A postman for many years and loved by everyone."

Another described Marty as 'a gentleman' who 'always had a good word for everyone'.

"All the children loved him in Ballyragget," they said. "RIP Marty."

Another note of condolence acknowledged his service to the community for many years, where he was 'well-known and extremely popular'.

Marty's passion and talent for hurling shines through also.

"I have many fond memories of Marty and his brothers playing hurling back in the fifties. May he rest in peace," another message read, whilst another noted that Marty was "a great hurler in his younger days."

Marty passed away on March 7 in Brookhaven Nursing Home and is pre-deceased by his parents, brothers and sisters.

Marty will be deeply missed by his loving family, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, great grand nieces, great grand nephews, extended family and friends.

Reposing from 3pm on Tuesday (March 10), concluding with Vigil Prayers and Rosary at pm.

Funeral cortege arriving at St Patrick's Church, Ballyragget on Wednesday morning for Requiem Mass at 10.30am, followed by Cremation Service in Newlands Cross Crematorium, Dublin at 1.30pm.
