Kilkenny Under 18's power way to Leinster title over Enniscorthy

The Kilkenny under-18 team who won the Leinster Youth title celebrate after the final.

A performance full of composure, power and attacking sharpness saw the Kilkenny under-18s beat Enniscorthy to get their hands on the Leinster Youth title.

On a day when the wind played a major role, Kilkenny showed from the outset that they were ready for the challenge in Athy on Sunday. Playing into a strong first-half breeze, they made the ideal start when captain Rory Dunne crossed after only four minutes.

The opening score owed much to the slick handling and close-quarter work of front-row teammates Ian McDonald and Theo Drennan, who helped create the space for Dunne to finish. The conversion drifted wide, but Kilkenny had settled immediately and led 5-0.

With the elements in their favour, Enniscorthy responded by forcing Kilkenny back deep inside their own 22.

For a spell, the pressure was relentless, but Kilkenny’s defence refused to buckle. A superb relieving clearance from Scott O’Shea helped swing the momentum, and Kilkenny quickly turned defence into attack through a sharp lineout and a series of powerful forward carries.

When the pressure told, O’Shea stepped up to split the posts with a penalty on 17 minutes and extend the lead to 8-0.

That score seemed to give Kilkenny even greater belief. Their tempo increased, their breakdown work improved, and suddenly Enniscorthy were the side under sustained pressure.

Kilkenny kept driving at the line and were rewarded when Ollie Molloy powered over for their second try. O’Shea added the extras on 23 minutes, and at 15-0 Kilkenny had built a significant cushion despite playing into the wind.

To Enniscorthy’s credit, they refused to fade. Paddy Dempsey struck back just three minutes later to leave the score at 15-5 and remind Kilkenny that the contest was far from over - but the response from Kilkenny was emphatic. They finished the half strongly and landed another telling blow when Fearghus O’Connor weaved his way through on a mazy run to score under the posts. O’Shea added the conversion, sending Kilkenny into the break with a deserved and commanding 22-5 lead.

Kilkenny started the second half just as they had begun the first - within two minutes Patrick Kennedy crossed the whitewash, O’Shea again adding the conversion to stretch the advantage to 29-5.

At that stage, Kilkenny looked firmly in control, but Enniscorthy continued to fight for everything. A sustained spell of possession eventually brought reward when Rickardt Lodewyks forced his way over. The missed conversion left the score at 29–10, but Enniscorthy’s perseverance ensured Kilkenny could not relax.

The game then settled into a more even pattern, with both sides trading territory and possession. Kilkenny, however, continued to look dangerous whenever they moved the ball with width and pace. That threat paid off again in the 65th minute, when slick handling in the backs created the opening for Cooper Delaney to finish impressively in the corner.

There was still time for Enniscorthy to claim a late consolation score through Ryan Byrne, but it did little to alter the overall picture. Kilkenny had been the more clinical, more physical and more composed side throughout, managing the difficult conditions to produce a display worthy of silverware.

Kilkenny now turn their attention to the Tom Darcy Cup, where they are due to face Dundalk away in the quarter-final on Saturday with a 12.30pm kick-off. Dundalk advanced to that tie after a 45-36 win over Athy in the previous round.
