Over 100 people attended the public meeting in Inistioge
Over 100 people attended a public meeting in Inistioge to discuss concerns about a planned windfarm in the area.
Community group, Protect Inistioge, organised the event as part of a co-ordinated campaign opposing the proposed Curraghmore Wind Farm by development company Empower Renewables, warning
that the project would cause irreversible harm to the local landscape, biodiversity, and community well-being.
The development plans include the construction of eight industrial-scale mega wind turbines, reaching heights of 175 metres.
Locals argue that the scale and location of the project make it unsuitable for the rural and heritage-rich setting of Inistioge.
A spokesperson for the group said that they were 'absolutely overwhelmed by the fantastic support' that they received at the meeting, which was held in the Cois Abhainn centre last Thursday.
"We shared updates on our campaign journey and outlined our groups next steps. Our special guest Stephen Keogh from CEPA (Communities and Environmental Protection Alliance) gave an eye-opening presentation on windfarm impacts on Irish rural communities, his research and experience were invaluable, it was quite sobering, providing us with concrete evidence of the real impacts these developments have on communities like ours.
"We held a great Q&A session with thoughtful questions and discussions related to this proposed development. Our feedback since has been staggering, and suggests serious community concern, people really did have no idea of the size and scope of this development in such an inappropriate site, so close to so many residents homes.
"It was encouraging to see all our neighbours connecting and offering support to one another. Our meeting proved that when a community comes together with a shared purpose, incredible things can happen. This is just the beginning. Together we wont stop, we have to protect our community, our landscape, and our homes," he said.
