Local Independent, councillor Eugene McGuinness has called for the faster installation of lights at zebra crossings across the city, warning that current crossings pose a serious safety risk to pedestrians.

"I’m no longer calling them zebra crossings, I’m calling them gazelle crossings because you need the speed of the gazelle to get across without getting knocked down," he said.

"They’re very dangerous, and it takes forever to get those lights going," he added, stressing that a number of people have raised the matter and are keen for a resolution.

New pedestrian crossings have been installed in Kilkenny City on the Johnswell Road, Castlecomer Road and Dublin Road in the past 12 months alone.
