Tony Joyce from Kilkenny Lions Club received one of the highest humanitarian awards nationwide last week, collecting the Melvin Jones Award at the Lions Convention in Monaghan.
Tony received the award for his outstanding work on the recent Lions Online Climate Change Event for transition year students, at which 9,000 students participated from schools all over the Island of Ireland. The event was titled "The Future is Brighter with Climate Action."
The objective of this online event was to educate and engage secondary school students with climate change, climate change science, mitigation, adaptation and what can individuals, schools and groups do.

The local volunteer is only the second person from Kilkenny Lions Club to receive the award in nearly 60 years since their establishment in 1967, with the late Brian O’Callaghan being the first recipient.
Tony has been involved in community work for a long number of years in Kilkenny. He was the Head Brewer in the Smithwicks Brewery and is presently chair of the Board of Management of the Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny.
