Cup joy for Evergreen and promotion woes for Stoneyford - Kilkenny Soccer

Evergreen beat last year's FAI Junior Cup finalists North End

It was a decisive weekend for Kilkenny & District League clubs domestically and in outside competition with promotion, relegation and a place in the next round of the FAI Junior Cup on the line.

FAI JUNIOR CUP
North End United (Wexford) 1, Evergreen 2 - Evergreen advanced to the fourth round of the competition in dramatic fashion, beating last year’s beaten finalists North End in the dying minutes of stoppage time.

Fresh after securing their ninth Premier Division title in a row last weekend, the Kilkenny side started positively and opened the scoring through Diarmuid Behan on the 11th minute.

The home side drew level from a Paul Murphy penalty two minutes before half-time with the North End striker on target for the 11th time in all competitions this season.

Gary Maher’s side spurned a chance to retake the lead just four minutes into the second half from yet another penalty.

Mikey Drennan unusually failed to convert the spot kick and his second in the competition in 2026.

But, after a tight nerve racking 40+ minutes, the winner eventually did arrive for the stripey men.

Drennan delivered the all important assist with Dara Keane in the right place at the right time to score. A rare goal for the 27 year old but arguably one of the most important of his career.

DIVISION 1 LEAGUE
Stoneyford United 1, East End United 3 - Promotion was on the line for Stoneyford United (2nd) on Sunday morning, with their team and management knowing a win would guarantee a place in the Premier Division next season.

However, things didn’t go to script for Damien Raggett’s team, who have now left the door open for Castlewarren Celtic (4th) to join Freebooters B in the top flight next season. A win for ‘Celtic against Spa United will see them take the promotion spot after years of narrowly missing out.

Jake O’Dwyer put the home side on the road to promotion with his lead goal after four minutes but three first half goals, all in the space of 12 minutes spoiled the party, as Noah Walsh Brennan, Liam Blanchfield and Gearoid Kent fired the away team to all three points, leaving the door open for a dramatic end to the season.
