Hopes are high that a shelter dog who has been moved from Kilkenny to Clare will finally find his forever home — following a period of rehabilitation in a local shelter.

Sammy originally arrived at the Carlow/Kilkenny Dog Shelter three days before Christmas in a ‘pitiful’ and ‘malnourished’ state.

He had a number of conditions such as worms, sores, and an eye infection, yet always acted as the ‘most affectionate boy’, according to the shelter.

Once he started to settle into the shelter, he started to gain weight, his skin improved, and he made lots of new friends.

"He was ready for his new home," the shelter said.

However, Sammy is yet to find his forever home, even after ‘briefly’ spending time in one house.

"While there, it was suspected he was having seizures and was put on medication, then returned," the shelter explained.

Sammy was taken off the medication, and the staff at the shelter have never seen him have a seizure.

"Ideally, we would love if a rescue had a space in a foster home,” the shelter explained.

"We know everyone is under pressure, but if anyone can help us out, we would be so grateful.

"Sammy is a really great dog who has had a bad start in life but deserves the best future.”

In recent days, Sammy has been taken into the care of Clare Animal Welfare.

The local shelter stated that they ‘can’t thank them enough for taking Sammy’.

"We know they will find him the best suitable home,” the shelter added.

“It’s difficult to say goodbye but we are so happy that he is one step closer to his new family.”
