Cllr Andrew McGuinness with Minister Charlie McConalogue
Local animal welfare charities are to get a funding windfall which may prove crucial in keeping their doors open after a very busy couple of months.
Kilkenny will be allocated €40,750, with 'A Dogs Life' granted €16,500 and KSPCA granted €24,250. Paws Animal Rescue in nearby Mullinahone is to get €73,475, while My Lovely Horse, which does a lot of work in Kilkenny, will get just over €50,000.
The Kilkenny People has been highlighting the issues the shelters have faced in recent weeks. The funding was announced today by Minister Charlie McConologue on the second annual Animal Welfare Awareness Day, and it has been hailed by Chairman of Kilkenny's Animal Welfare Committee Andrew McGuinness as a positive step.
"I welcome the announcement by Minister McConologue who I have met regarding animal welfare in Kilkenny. He was always very positive about the progress we have made in Kilkenny and the structure we have created with our committee and working closely with the animal welfare organisations and of course, the by laws we have introduced here," said Cllr McGuinness.
"I'm also delighted to see that My Lovely Horse Rescue were awarded over €50,000 as they do trojan work here in Kilkenny, particularly in terms of the horses. They are fantastic and I cannot speak highly enough of them.
"Of course I would like to see more funding invested in this area throughout Kilkenny and the rest of the country but this is very positive news and I commend the Minister for his commitment to animal welfare."
