July- End of an era as the inimitable Brian Cody announces his departure

The reign of the GAA’s greatest ever manager came to an end in July.

After 24 years in the Kilkenny senior hurling hot seat, Brian Cody announced his departure this month.

In stepping down as Bainisteoir, the final chapter of Kilkenny hurling’s most successful story has been written. Since taking over the reins in 1998, the James Stephens man has overseen an unprecedented level of glory.

Under his tenure the Cats claimed 11 senior All-Ireland titles — a haul which has taken them from third in the roll of honour to a peerless first place — as well as 18 Leinster and 10 National League crowns.

In South Kilkenny there was a sense of relief and celebration when the sod was finally turning on a new multi-million cheese-making factory, following two years of legal challenges to the development’s planning permission.

Belview

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue were on hand to help partners Glanbia Co-Op and Dutch firm Royal A-Ware to turn the first sod at the Belview Port site. The multi-million euro project that will see up to 50,000 tonnes of cheese manufactured in South Kilkenny every year.

Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny also reopened with exciting new spaces and enhancements throughout in July.

History

The unique Smithwick’s Experience explores over 300 years of history with brewing excellence, providing visitors with an immersive, multi-sensory experience celebrating Smithwick’s, Ireland’s most popular ale.

As well as offering first-hand experience of the brewing process, tour guides take visitors on a storytelling journey, introducing guests to memorable characters along the way.

The tourist attraction closed in April 2021.
