Modern technology is set to enhance the experience of walking in Kilkenny’s beauty spots.
Audio and visual aids are planned and a partnership with an app is already up and running, aimed at making Kilkenny’s walking routes more accessible to all.
Updating local councillors on the work of Trails Kilkenny, Harry Everard also set out some of the advances in technology that he hopes to adopt.
Already, Trails Kilkenny has partnered with HiiKER app. HiiKER is an Irish-owned company that has developed a user-friendly way of discovering, planning and navigating trails all over the world. If you subscribe to HiiKER PRO, a portion of each sale will be donated back to the Trail Kilkenny You can find more information and a download link on trailkilkenny.ie
Mr Everard also set out plans to make trails more accessible. He is currently working on funding and installing audio points along the Nore Valley walk for use by people with sensory or learning difficulties. These points will give an audio description of the route and surrounding flora and fauna. Five audio points have been tendered through LEADER.
Visual information boards are also planned for trails and these have been tendered through ORIS.
Trails Kilkenny is involved in the management, development, marketing and maintenance of walking trails in the county.
Mr Everard said 28 landowners in Kilkenny benefit from the Walks Scheme, a bi-annual payment to landowners to maintain a portion of a trail that crosses their land. Approximately 30 new landowners will be added with new additions to trails. This is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development.
Footfall counters on existing trails have shown an increased use of all routes in the last year.
The scope of the work of Trails Kilkenny is “incredible” Cllr Patrick O’Neill said, highlighting the benefits to communities. He said it was great to see the footfall continuing and “long may it continue.”
Following the suggestion of new trail routes by councillors Mr Everard said all communities are encouraged to come to him with walking route suggestions.
He said Sport Ireland covers insurance for the trails which he ensures are all maintained and inspected.
