Kilkenny City’s one-way system will be staying in place for the time being after a notice of motion at today's city council meeting failed to win support from members.
Cllr Eugene McGuinness brought the motion calling for an end to the current traffic system, reading as follows: “Now that the Government have removed all Covid restrictions, which also removes the need for social distancing I would ask Kilkenny County Council to reinstate the pre-covid, two-way traffic system.”
However, the motion did not find a seconder at this afternoon's meeting of Kilkenny City Municipal District.
Previously, at the December meeting, the members agreed that - while it may not ultimately be the long-term traffic management solution - the new one-way system was continuing to prove effective in fulfilling its purpose as a measure to facilitate social distancing and keep people safe.
Surveys carried out by the council and Kilkenny Chamber have shown a divergence of opinion about what the best long-term traffic solution for Kilkenny City is.
