Despite the patchy weather, it was still a busy weekend on the local soccer scene in Kilkenny with a full round of league fixtures down for decision.
Highview Athletic played host to Bridge United in Graiguenamanagh in the St Canices Premier Division on Sunday and the home side ran out 3-1 winners.
The victory moved Highview off the bottom of the league table after they earned their second success of the season to move within six points of Bridge United.
It was one of two fixtures in the top division at the weekend with Thomastown travelling to Laois to meet Clover United and the wheels are in danger of falling off their title bid after they went down to a 2-1 defeat.
The Kilkenny side trailed 1-0 at half-time and while Robert Skehan did equalise, the Laois side were still able to find a winner in the second half.
Thomastown are still level on points in joint top position with city sides Freebooters and Evergreen but with both of them having games in hand, Thomastown are very much the outsiders as it stands.
There was also two games in the Junior Intosport.ie Division 1 League and Fort Rangers moved their way ahead of Callan United to the top of the table after having a 4-1 victory over Ormonde Villa in Cuffesgrange.
Evan Walsh was on the scoresheet for Ormonde Villa but they were thoroughly ouclassed by their hosts.
The other game saw a meeting between Evergreen B and C on the Kells Road but there was nothing to seperate the teams after they played out a scoreless draw.
The result means Evergreen C remain winless at the base of the league while Evergreen B’s promotion hopes are faltering a little bit as they sit eight points behind the leaders in third spot.
The action in the Junior Eamonn Maher Coach Hire Division 2 League continues to excite and Freshford Town were in fine form as they shot seven goals past Bridge United B.
Freshford are slowly but surely working their way up the table and while a recent defeat to Thomastown United B certainly stalled their progress, they are still very much in the title hunt with games in hand on St Canices, Lions AFC and River Rangers ahead of them.
The other game in the division saw Castlewarren Celtic emerge as 4-2 winners over Thomastown United B.
The domestic action for the weekend was then rounded off in the Junior Division 3 League where Brookville had a 4-0 win away to Newpark B and Deen Celtic and Evergreen 46 shared the spoils after playing out a 1-1 draw in The Prince Grounds.
Those results mean Tullaroan and St.Johns remain unchanged at the top of the table while Evergreen 46 remain rooted to the bottom.
There was also action in the LFA O'Neills Junior Plate over the course of the weekend with St Canices and River Rangers both securing their places in the next round with a set of 3-0 wins over Glenmuir United and Cabinteely FC Under 20’s respectively.
