WEEE collections of household electrical items return to Kilkenny towns this year.

Five communities will host the collections in May and June.

Collections will begin on May 21, at Erins Own GAA Club in Castlecomer. Other collections will take place at Piltown Community Centre on May 28; at Thomastown Quay car park on June 4; Johnstown church car park on June 11; and at Cillin Hill Mart on June  18.

All collections will be held on Saturdays.

In a presentation to local councillors, Bernadette Moloney, Environmental Awareness Officer with Kilkenny County Council, also highlighted the permanent, free WEEE drop off locations around the county - at businesses including Doheny’s Recycling Centre on the Callan Road, Panda Waste Recycling in Kilkenny City, and electrical stores like  DID Electrical. They are also located at county council facilities at Dunmore Waste and Recycling Centre and Grannagh Recycling Centre.

Ms Molouney encouraged householders to have their small, electrical items ready for the collections. If any site does not yield more than ten tonnes WEEE Ireland won’t hold a collection there again.

Municipal District Chairman, Cllr Michael Doyle, said it was great to see the selection of collection points and acknowledged the huge amount of work of groups and organisations that help clean up their own areas. It’s vital and really appreciated, he said.

He said people convicted of littering should be handed down “huge fines.”

Director of Services Mary Mulholland said there is no excuse for illegal dumping. If someone is going to make the effort to put an item in their car, drive out the country and throw it out they can drive to one of the right disposal locations “because it’s going to be their friends and neighbours cleaning up after them.”
